Twisted Italian Bread-Sticks
First of all, what a fun way to change up a traditional dinner roll! My kids were all over me as I was wrapping the dough around each skewers (whenever they weren't using them as swords on one another that is! Why is everything a weapon to little boys!?).
I always know if a recipe is a keeper if my boys will eat it. If my daughter eats it, it means nothing as she eats everything! My boys, on the other hand, eat nothing, which is strange considering how much energy they produce!
Anyways, I found this fun and delicious dinner roll recipe from The Stay At Home Chef, but you can use your favorite roll recipe or even thawed out Rhodes rolls! This recipe will make about 16 bread sticks but it can easily be halved.
Twisted Italian Bread-Sticks
Bread Ingredients:
2 c. Warm milk
2 Tbs. Instant Dry Yeast
1/4 c. Sugar
2 tsp. Salt
6 Tbs. Butter, softened
2 Eggs
6 c. All Purpose Flour
Topping Ingredients:
1/2 c. Butter, melted
1/4 c. Grated Parmesan Cheese
1/4 c. Shredded Parmesan Cheese
1 1/2 tsp. Oregano
1 1/2 tsp. Parsley Flakes
1 tsp. Garlic Powder
Dash of Pepper
Directions:
1. In a stand mixer, combine warm milk, yeast, sugar, salt and butter. Mix in eggs.
2.Add in 2 cups flour and mix well. Switch to a dough hook and add in 3 cups flour. Slowly add the remaining 1 cup of flour until it pulls away from the sides of the bowl. The dough will be a little sticky.
3. Oil a bowl and place the dough inside, covered, and wait for it to rise. This will take about an hour.
4. Cut the dough into 16 pieces, roll them about 15 inches long, wrap around a wooden skewer, and place on a greased or parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
5. Let the dough rise for another hour around the skewers.
6. Bake at 375 for 12-14 minutes. They will be a nice golden brown.
7. While the bread-sticks are baking, grab a small bowl and mix together the melted butter, grated Parmesan, shredded Parmesan, oregano, parsley, garlic powder and dash of pepper. Once the rolls have been removed from the oven brush the butter mixture over top each breadstick.
